Industrial and Engineering Systems

What is the Industrial and Engineering Systems Career Area?

The Industrial and Engineering Systems Career Learning Area relates to the technologies used to design, develop, install, operate, maintain, and upgrade physical systems. These include, but are not limited to, engineering and related design technologies, mechanical systems, manufacturing technologies, precision production, construction, electrical systems, and electronics and information technologies. People in this field use academic and technological knowledge and skills to design, build, inspect, deliver, maintain, and repair aircraft, automobiles, buildings, computer equipment, roads, bridges, and manufacturing machinery.

How to Pursue Education and Training in Industrial and Engineering Systems

Careers related to Industrial and Engineering Systems are particularly attractive to those who like to design and build the world around them. Education and training can be obtained in high schools, technical colleges, two-year community colleges, four-year colleges, apprenticeship programs, and career technical schools/institutes. Although the required levels of education may change with careers in this area, many require a solid grasp of math, science, communications, and technical skills.

Careers have also evolved to incorporate a great deal of computer technology, as in the case of 3D modeling for engineering and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) in manufacturing. The most successful students who move into careers related to Industrial and Engineering Systems have spent part of their education getting to know the careers through internships and job shadows. Students have also participated in team and individual projects that can demonstrate the ability to move from idea to production.
