What is the Human Resources Career Area?
The Human Resources Career Learning Area includes a wide range of careers that weave together work in the areas that focus on people: their needs, their growth and development, and their safety and well-being. Those who work in the fields representing human resources need a common foundation of knowledge and skills that enable them to assess the complex dilemmas facing individuals and groups in unique situations, identify and weigh options and possibilities, and act in ways that are effective and socially responsible. Careers in this area are very diverse and range—for example—from education to corrections, from law and government to fire and safety, and from child development to national security.
How to Pursue Education and Training in Human Resources
Human Resources covers a wide variety of careers. There are opportunities to work in the field of education, whether in a classroom or supporting the educational system in another capacity. The area of government and public administration may be explored at entry level, and there are also careers which utilize the skills and education of people who have specifically studied these fields through higher education.
Careers in the human services area may need a high school level education, short-term training and certification beyond high school, a two-year or four-year degree, or even a graduate degree, depending on your area of interest. Careers in public safety will frequently need additional training or certification beyond high school.
Students who enroll in programs of study in the Human Resources areas will be given opportunities to explore post-high school career and education opportunities by connecting with their classroom teachers, school counselors, and other career development personnel in their school or district.
