Other Devices

In addition to heating and cooling or renewable energy systems, other energy efficient devices can save you money on your energy bills.
​Windows ​New windows can make a big difference in comfort, and can save energy for heating and cooling as they reduce drafts and heat loss. New windows can also help block outside noise. Some windows come with reflective coating, called Low-E, to keep heat in during the winter and out in the summer.

Make it efficient: double- or triple-pane windows will work best to maintain your home or business's interior temperature. 
​Electric Vehicles ​Electric cars have motors that run on a rechargeable battery instead of traditional petroleum-based fuels. These motors are about three times more efficient than traditional internal combustion engines. Electric car technology improves each year, with added battery life and faster charging.

Making the switch to an electric vehicle reduces your carbon emissions and saves you money on fuel.

​Electric Vehicle Chargers
​Electric vehicle chargers are used to provide energy to fuel EVs.  Most charging in Oregon is done at home, and there are different levels of EV charger capacity.

Make it efficient: Look for an Energy Star certified charger to save energy while in standby mode, help ensure high-quality performance, and come equipped with the latest industry communications standards.

​Water Heaters Efficient water heaters use far less energy to heat water than traditional water heaters. Water heating is the second largest energy expense in your home. Efficient water heaters include:

  • Electric heat pump water heaters: usually located in a garage or basement and typically use half the electricity of storage electric resistance water heaters.
  • Tankless gas or electric water heaters: provide water only when needed. Rather than store water in a tank, water is heated quickly as it moves through a heating unit.
  • Storage water heaters: heat water in a tank using natural gas or other fuel and have better insulation and improved heating efficiency.
  • Wastewater heat recovery: also known as drain-water heat recovery systems, these water heaters capture the heat from water going down the drain to help heat fresh water coming in to the bath or shower.

Make it efficient: "Uniform Energy Factor", or UEF, is a measure of water heater efficiency. Check out Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance's Qualified Products list to get you started. An "Energy Factor" is a good measure. Also, look for an Energy Star rated water heater. Electric heat pump models should have an UEF of 3.31.8 or greater. Tankless gas models should be 0.950.82 or greater. Storage gas should be 0.700.86 or greater. Also, look for the yellow Energy Guide label and talk to your installer. Also, look for water heaters that are demand-response ready with a CTA-2045 communications port.

​Other Appliances ​Appliances and other home electronics can have a big impact on your energy bill, so choose energy-efficient models whenever possible. For some appliances, Oregon sets minimum product efficiency standards to help ensure consumers receive the most efficient products available.

Make it efficient: In the market for a new appliance? ENERGY STAR can help you find efficient options. The ENERGY STAR label on appliances shows that the device exceeds the minimum federal standards for energy-efficiency. Most appliances will also have a bright yellow Energy Guide label, which provides estimated annual energy use and cost. Compare labels to find the best option for you. 

​LED Lighting ​Light-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs are one of the most energy-efficient lighting options on the market. LED bulbs last longer, produce less heat, and use far less energy than traditional incandescent and fluorescent lights. Replacing old bulbs with LEDs in your home can lower your home's energy use.

Make it efficient: Look for the ENERGY STAR ​label on your bulbs. ENERGY STAR-rated bulbs are guaranteed to be high-quality and energy-efficient.
