Mathematics Local Performance Assessments

Overview

A Mathematics Local Performance Assessment is required to be administered for students in grades 3 through 8 and at least once in high school (OAR 581-22-0615).

Local Performance Assessments will more effectively support student learning when they are integrated systematically into the district curriculum and are also part of classroom instruction and may be offered multiple times during the school year.

Mathematics Local Performance Assessments

A math performance assessment is a method used to evaluate an individual's ability to apply mathematical concepts and practices aligned to Oregon’s Mathematics Standards. In a math performance assessment, individuals are typically asked to perform tasks responding to real world tasks and apply their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Performance assessments must be a standardized measure.  (e.g., activity, exercise, problem, or work sample scored by a common scoring instrument, such as the official state scoring guides or another scoring guide adopted by the district) that is embedded in the school curriculum and evaluates the application of students’ knowledge and skills. For local performance assessments, districts may locally develop scoring guidelines so that they can provide feedback to students, or they may use the Official State Mathematics Scoring Guide.

Work Samples, scored using the official state scoring guide, are just one example of acceptable performance assessments. Districts have substantial flexibility when it comes to planning the performance assessments that will be used to fulfill this requirement. Educators can observe and evaluate various aspects of the individual's mathematical skills as aligned to the math performance tasks.
