Mary was born in Portland, Oregon, and adopted at just one week old. She spent her formative years along the serene McKenzie River, attending McKenzie High School, where she was part of
a graduating class of only 21 students.
Mary’s Oregon story is one of deep-rooted connection and love for the state. She treasures the unique geographic diversity that Oregon offers: within half a day’s drive, she can find herself in
a desert, a bustling city, the mountains, or the coast. Mary also appreciates the considerate and patient nature of Oregonians, exemplified by people waiting at crosswalks in the rain even when
no cars are coming.
A proud mother of four, Mary’s family is a significant part of her life. Her eldest son is an Nuclear Electronics Engineer in the Navy, serving on a nuclear aircraft carrier. Another child works as a data analyst, while another is a Special Education EA with the ESD. Her daughters are also involved in remarkable pursuits, including participating in the world’s toughest rowing challenge, "The Hurricane Rowing," from Monterey to Kauai. Mary eagerly anticipates witnessing her daughters make a world record.
Mary has been a dedicated classified employee and professional educator since 2000, starting with Bend/LaPine. Seeking a role that allowed her more time with her young children, she took a
30% pay cut. Her twins, born twelve weeks premature, were on disability, adding to her motivation for a balanced work-life environment.
Before becoming the office manager at Bend High School, Mary worked in curriculum and scheduling, where she meticulously managed endorsements to create the master schedule. Her
comprehensive understanding of TSPC requirements continues to be essential in her current role, managing a comprehensive school with 120 staff members and 1300 students.
Mary’s community-centered experience extends beyond education. She worked in an insurance firm, assisting people with their coverage needs. Her leadership roles include serving as State
Board Secretary in 2015 for OSEA, being a precinct 42 committee person, and holding the position of Secretary Treasurer for the Central Oregon Labor Council.
Passionate about family, children, and the Central Oregon outdoors, Mary enjoys paddleboarding and spending time in nature. Her commitment to caregiving spans multiple generations,
reflecting her deep sense of responsibility and compassion.
Mary is thrilled about the opportunity to use her 20+ years experience with certified staffing and as an advocate for classified school as the first classified public school employee on the TSPC
and aspires to highlight the crucial supportive role classified staff play daily. She believes in strong governance systems with checks and balances to ensure the most vulnerable community members receive the support they need for a higher quality of life.
Mary's family legacy of community support is also noteworthy. Her son’s service in the Navy and her daughter’s work on the Big Island to control invasive species and protect First Nations’ heritage sites exemplify their shared commitment to making a positive impact.
With a wealth of experience and a passion for service, Mary is dedicated to contributing to her community and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all.
