Pride Month event on June 29

Oregon LGBTQ+ Older Adult Survey logo: the shape of the state of Oregon in rainbow colors

As part of Pride Month, join the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion offices of DCBS and Business Oregon for a special session on Wednesday, June 29. The event – Intersectionality: Our Next Steps Together – will start at 10:30 a.m. and will be held via Zoom.

Charles Donald, Naomi Sacks, and Debie McCuin will share about the first-of-its-kind Oregon LGBTQ+ Older Adult Survey. Oregon is experiencing steady growth among the older adult population, with increasing diversity by race and ethnicity, as well as by sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Today, older Oregonians that identify as LGBTQ+ remain a largely invisible population. Not many people are aware of the unique challenges they face, their needs, or resources available to them.

In 2021, the Oregon Office of Aging and People with Disabilities (APD) commissioned a community-based survey to learn more about this population. Specifically, the statewide Oregon Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (ORBRFSS) data was used to understand the risks, needs and strengths of demographically diverse LGBTQ+ Oregonians aged 55 and older, including those not represented in previous studies.
