Holidays: Veterans Day and Thanksgiving

Typographical art saying "Thank you veterans. November 11th" and "Happy Thanksigiving"

This month, we celebrate two holidays: Veterans Day and Thanksgiving.

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served in the military. For one day, we stand united in respect for our veterans. This holiday originally started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country’s service during World War I, and it was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the truce that ended the fighting of World War I. In 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to account for all veterans in all wars. Each year, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs releases an official poster for Veterans Day. The theme for this year’s poster was honor.

And then there’s Thanksgiving Day. We are all pretty familiar with the American holiday, so here are a few other thanksgiving traditions from around the world:

My apologies if I didn’t include one of your favorite thanksgiving traditions. If that’s the case, please let me know.

Finally, do you know why Thanksgiving and other American traditions are celebrated in Liberia? Send me an email with your response at veronica.a.murray@dcbs.oregon.gov.
