ERDC Training

Before you are approved: New license exempt child care providers must complete pre-service trainings before they can be listed and approved to receive payment through the Employment Related Day Care Program.

After you are approved: Once approved, license exempt child care providers must complete a 2-part orientation and ongoing trainings to continue receiving payments.

Pre-service Health & Safety Trainings

Pre-service trainings must be completed before new child care providers can be listed and approved by DELC.

Training #1: Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety

Required for: All license exempt providers

Format: Online

Course Link: Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety training

Time Needed: About 2 hours

The Training Covers:

  • Prevention and control of infectious diseases
  • Prevention of sudden infant death syndrome and use of safe sleep practices
  • Administration of medication
  • Prevention and response to emergencies due to food and allergic reactions
  • Building and physical premises safety
  • Prevention of shaken baby syndrome and abusive head trauma
  • Emergency preparedness and response planning
  • Handling and storage of hazardous materials and the disposal of bio-contaminants
  • Appropriate precautions in transporting children

Training #2: Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

Required for: All license exempt providers who are not related to all children in their care. This training is not required if you are a great-grandparent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or sibling not living in the home of the child.

Format: Online

Course Link: Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

Time Needed: About 2 hours

Training #3: Infant and Child CPR and First Aid

Required for: All license exempt providers who are not related to all children in their care. This training is not required if you are a great-grandparent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or sibling not living in the home of the child.

What is Required: Current Child and Infant CPR and First Aid certification. If you do not have one, contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral Agency at 800-342-6712 for training dates. You may be eligible for a short-term waiver if a training date is not readily available in your area.

Training #4: Foundations for Learning

Required for: All providers

Format: Online

Course Link: Foundations for Learning (FFL)

Time Needed: 2 hours

The Training Covers: 2 hours

  • Importance of relationships with children in your care
  • Understanding child development
  • How to foster/nurture learning experiences for children in care

Orientation

2-part Orientation

Required for: All newly approved license-exempt providers

Format: Part 1 is online, and part 2 is in person. See the list below to find an orientation in your county.

Timeline: Both parts must be completed within 90 days of the date you are approved by DELC

Part 1 Covers:

  • The process to become listed and approved for DELC payments
  • DELC health and safety standards
  • Provider requirements
  • Basic billing practices

Part 2 Covers:

  • The payment process
  • Program rules
  • Child care provider rights and responsibilities
  • Enhanced rate training options
  • Food program resources through the U.S. Department of Agriculture
  • Other resources and reimbursements available through public and private sources

Note: If you don't take these trainings within 90 days of DELC approval, you can't continue to receive payment for child care. If this happens, you may be required to complete a new Child Care Provider Listing Form after you take the Orientation trainings.

Ongoing Training

Annual Health and Safety Training

Required for: All license exempt providers who are not related to all children in their care. This training is not required if you are a great-grandparent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or sibling not living in the home of the child.

What is Required: Every year, child care providers must take a Health and Safety training recognized by the Oregon Center for Career Development in Childhood Care and Education (OCCD).

Time needed: About 1 hour

Additional Training: 6 hours every 2 years

Required for: All license exempt providers who are not related to all children in their care. This training is not required if you are a great-grandparent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or sibling not living in the home of the child.

What is Required: Six hours of additional trainings are needed in each two-year period including:

  • Two hours in human growth and development
  • Two hours in understanding and guiding behavior
  • Two hours in a core knowledge category of the provider or staff's choice
