Details

About

Planning for future transporation development in the south Medford, Interstate 5 Exit 27 area.

Location

I-5 |

The study area centers at the Exit 27, south Medford interchange and extends to the Oregon 99/Garfield Street intersection to the southwest; the Barnett Road/Ellendale Drive intersection to the northeast; and the Barnett Road/East Stewart Avenue intersection to the northwest.

Cost and Funding

ODOT is funding the $215,000 study using State Planning and Research funds as an internal planning study in coordination with the following local agencies: City of Medford, Rogue Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (RVMPO) and Rogue Valley Transit District (RVTD).

Benefits

This project will identify various possible traffic solutions for the interchange and local street intersections. It will also indentify the maximum allowed traffic congestion — known in planning as Alternative Mobility Targets  — for the interchange ramps. These targets will help support future new development within south Medford.

The identified traffic solutions and Alternative Mobility Targets will be adopted by the City of Medford and the Oregon Transportation Commission as amendments to the I-5 Exit 27 Interchange Area Management Plan.

What Problem Will This Improve?

Medford's Transportation System Plan (TSP) Update identified future capacity deficiencies at and near the I-5 south Medford interchange. It recommended Alternative Mobility Targets for the interchange. New development in south Medford will increase traffic demand at the interchange and contribute to traffic queues backing down the ramps to the I-5 travel lanes.

Without any new traffic solutions, future development within Medford's Urban Growth Boundary will further degrade the interchange's safety and operations.
