Air Quality & Energy

A windmill faces north with a view of Mt. Hood to the east against blue skiesAir quality can be affected by Oregon Department of Transportation activities. These activities are normally related primarily to construction or modification of roads and highways, but they can also include a wide variety of construction or demolition activities.

In order to comply with National Environmental Protection Act, an energy analysis is appropriate for some proposed transportation projects. ODOT recommends that a quantitative energy analysis is conducted for environmental impact study projects. Sometimes the construction energy requirements are greater than the benefit that may be obtained from operation energy savings.

ODOT works closely with the Federal Highway Administration and the Department of Environmental Quality to identify air quality and energy issues along with construction problems in the earliest stages of project development to ensure ODOT complies with related state and federal laws.
