Immunization Resources for Oregon Pharmacists

In Oregon, pharmacists can immunize people aged 7 years or older with all ACIP recommended vaccines in accordance with posted pharmacy protocols. With a valid prescription, pharmacists may administer vaccine to a patient of any age.

What immunizing pharmacists need to know

  1. Pharmacists must follow the Oregon Board of Pharmacy protocols for vaccine administration
  2. Immunizations given must be reported to the Oregon Immunization Information System, ALERT IIS.
    • Please call 1-800-980-9431 for questions about reporting to the ALERT IIS.
    • NOTICE: Implementation date was no later than January 1, 2014.
      For each vaccine encounter, prior to administering vaccine, pharmacy personnel will look up each patient in the ALERT Immunization Information System (IIS) to determine the patient's vaccine history and to forecast recommended vaccines.
      Exceptions:
      • This is not required when administering only influenza vaccines, but will continue to be recommended to help increase pneumococcal and all other recommended vaccine rates.
      • This is not required when the pharmacy/pharmacist conducts a remote vaccine clinic, but will continue to be recommended when remote connectivity is available.
  3. Pharmacists interested in enrolling in a state-supplied vaccine program should refer to the VFC-VAP Pharmacy Guide for more information.

Vaccine Access Program (VAP)

Pharmacists interested in providing no-cost vaccines to uninsured adults and VFC-eligible children as well as low-cost vaccines to privately insured adults and children may be eligible to become a VAP provider and receive vaccines from the Oregon Immunization Program to help decrease immunization disparities. Your pharmacy is only billed for vaccines administered to privately insured patients.

Yellow Fever
