Lyme disease is an infection caused by the corkscrew-shaped bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi that is transmitted by the bite of deer (Ixodes scapularis) and western black-legged (Ixodes pacificus) ticks. On the Pacific Coast, the bacteria are transmitted to humans by the western black-legged tick.

What is required?

Health Care Providers and Clinical Laboratories

Health care providers and clinical laboratories are required by law to report cases and suspect cases of Lyme disease to local health departments within one working day of identification.
