Avian Influenza

The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is actively collaborating with the Oregon Department of Agriculture to monitor the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) outbreak among livestock in the United States. At this time, there have been no HPAI oubreaks in Oregon dairy cattle. The current risk to the general public from HPAI is very low. All people in Oregon exposed to infected animals are monitored by public health through 10 days following their last exposure. Additional surveillance for avian influenza in humans includes subtyping of influenza A-positive specimens and wastewater surveillance for the influenza A(H5) subtype.

CDC H5N1 Bird Flu: Current Situation Summary
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration monitors the safety of the milk supply. At this time, all studies have demonstrated that pasteurized dairy products are safe for human consumption. Oregon Health Authority recommends against the consumption of raw milk products due to the risk of contamination with bacteria and viruses including avian influenza.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service monitor the safety of the egg supply. At this time, eggs remain safe to eat when prepared properly.
