Influenza Reporting in Oregon

Reporting Influenza-Related Complications

magnified image of a virusReporting the influenza-related complications below helps us understand risk factors for severe illness related to influenza and identify newly-emerging or resistant strains of influenza.

What to Report

Statewide:

  • Deaths in any Oregon resident less than 18 years of age with laboratory-confirmed influenza;
  • Any novel influenza virus (a human case of infection with an influenza A virus subtype that is different from currently circulating human influenza H1 and H3 viruses).

Portland Tri-County Area (Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties):

  • We request reports on all hospitalized patients of any age with laboratory-confirmed influenza, who are residents of Multnomah, Clackamas or Washington county. The Oregon State Public Health Laboratory will perform free typing and subtyping by PCR on specimens from any hospitalized patient with influenza-like illness, even if rapid tests have been negative. See influenza testing.
