Some Oregon State Hospital patients on the Salem campus make Adirondack furniture. Through this vocational opportunity, patients learn new skills that will help them find employment in the community.
Through the community partnership, OSH patients grow flowers and veggie starts in the greenhouse on the hospital grounds for the nursery to sell. The nursery gains a supplier, the patients learn small-business practices, and, most importantly, community members learn more about the talents and capabilities of OSH patients.

Treatment

Did you know Oregon State Hospital has a service dog training program for patients?
In the summer of 2019, the trainers played with a dozen 9-week-old Labrador puppies slated for service – some of which may later return to the hospital for formal training! The visit’s purpose was to help socialize the puppies and teach patients how to interact with them.
On May 5, 2019, Oregon State Hospital patients and staff attended the
Joys of Living Assistance Dogs (JLAD) graduation ceremony at the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center in Salem.
Trixie, who was trained as part of the hospital’s new Service Dog Training Program, honed her strength retrieval skills through swim therapy.
