Public Meetings Trainings

There are several training options available for Public Meetings Law, both through the Oregon Government Ethics Commission (OGEC) and other approved entities.

OGEC currently offers Public Meetings Law trainings in-person, online, and via hybrid formats. We are working to develop additional resources and training formats.

Frequently Asked Questions on Public Meetings Law Trainings


​No, it is not the public body or governing body's responsibility to track who has taken the training. It is the responsibility of the individual governing body members to keep records of the Public Meetings Law training they have attended, including the date and who provided the training (OAR 199-050-0080(2)(b)).

For governing body members who take a Public Meetings Law training with OGEC, they will receive a certificate of compleition within a week of the training. The certificate will be sent to the email that they used when registering for the training.

​For governing body members who are required to take the Public Meetings Law training under ORS 192.700, they must take the training at least once during each term of office.

​Yes, if a governing body member is up for re-election, they need to wait until after the election to take the training again. OAR 199-050-0080(2)(a) says that governing body members who are required to take the Public Meetings Law training, are required to do so during each term they hold office. However, it can be at any time during their new term of office.

​Governing body members must taking the Public Meetings Law training provided by OGEC or a training approved by OGEC to meet the training requirement in ORS 192.700 (OAR 199-050-0080(2)(a)).

​To track participation in order to provide certificates of completion for Public Meetings Law trainings, we require that governing body members participate individually in trainings.

For live webinars, this means they will need to have their own login and device to view and engage in the webinar.

For hybrid or customized virtual trainings, we can set up a singular room as long as each participating governing body member has access to a device (cell phone, laptop, tablet, etc.). They must use the device to log into our polling site and answer questions to verify their attendance and participation.
