ODOT's Hazardous Materials Group is responsible for facilitating agency compliance with environmental regulations pertaining to site cleanup, waste management, water discharges, and hazardous materials use.

Corridor and Site Assessments
- Conducting assessments to determine the presence of contamination prior to property acquisition or construction.
- Surveying building materials, such as asbestos containing materials, PCB lamp ballasts, fluorescent tubes and other mercury lamps, lead-based pint, etc., to determine appropriate removal and disposal options.
Guidance on Site Cleanup and Hazardous Materials Management
- Overseeing underground storage tank and underground injection control system (dry well) decommissioning.
- Conducting cleanup of maintenance yards and surplus properties.
Mitigation Support for Contaminated Sites
- Providing guidance on fuel storage, hazardous materials use and waste management.
- Working with DEQ and Department of Justice to determine liability for cleanup of contamination in ODOT right-of-way.
Guidance on Jobsite and Worker Safety
- Ensuring provisions are in place to protect workers and the environment during construction.
