Traffic Counting

COVID-19 traffic monitoring reports were prepared by ODOT between April 2020 and July 2021. View the most recent report below. Older reports have been archived but are available on request.

Starting in 2019, these files include reference information and links to the sections listed below. Within the reference information you will find: contact info, definitions, trend data, highway cross reference tables, highway count schedule, a map of the Oregon state highway system and the glossary.

Prior to 2019, these files include the entire TVT publication with tabulation of traffic volumes, interchange ramp volume diagrams, and traffic trends at automatic traffic recorder stations.

Volumes listed by Highway Number and Mile Post

This section contains a tabulation of ODOT Highway Numbers listing Annual Average Daily Traffic, or AADT, at various milepoints along the highways. This includes all vehicle totals in both directions, unless identified as one-way traffic.

Approximately one third of State Highways are counted each year and adjusted to a current AADT. The AADTs for the remaining two thirds of the State Highways are adjusted to reflect area traffic growth trends.

When a new highway is completed and opens to traffic for only part of the year, the AADT as given in this tabulation is presented as if the facility was open to traffic for the entire year.

An asterisk appearing to the left of a count location description indicates an Automatic Traffic Recorder Station or Automatic Vehicle Classification Station. More in-depth information is available for these permanent sites, such as monthly traffic volumes or historical trends.

Detailed State Highway Segment Traffic Data

These files include more detailed traffic data per roadway segment including FHWA 13 classification percentages, peak single and multi-unit truck percentages, K and D factors, and ton factor. For information on counting methodology and data collection schedules, see the Transportation Volume Tables document available above.

This section contains Interchange Ramp Diagrams with Annual Average Daily Traffic, or AADT, volumes for the Highway Main Line by direction and Interchange Ramps. Please note that we no longer make this data available separately - ramp volumes are now available in the OTMS.

For each station, ten years of historical data is listed showing the annual average daily traffic, or ADT. The maximum day, maximum hour, 10th, 20th, 30th highest hours are shown in percent of ADT. Asterisks indicate recorder was inoperative during periods of maximum expected traffic.

Oregon County Numbers and Names

The ATR data consists of both the Average Weekday Traffic, or AWD, and Average Daily Traffic by months. Also a vehicle classification breakdown is shown by percent of ADT. Classification counts were obtained for 24 or 48 hour periods.

This section contains links to the Traffic Count Request form. Please note that the form is for ODOT personnel use only.

• Traffic Count Request Form - Use this form to request traffic count data from the TSM Unit. Please refer to the form instructions before filling out your request.
• Planner Request Form (Excel) - You may use this Excel spreadsheet as an alternate way to easily list all of your sites and types of counts. If you use this spreadsheet, you must also submit a request using the online form linked above and include this spreadsheet as an attachment.

This section contains scanned copies of traffic count books from ODOT’s early publications. These are available for those who need to research. The publications include books for both state highways and non-state roads. Non-state roads have been counted up to the present in order to provide FHWA data since they provide funds for these roads. That is why the non-state publications are titled Federal Aid.

Use of the map from the appropriate year is vital to finding the correct data. Jurisdictional transfers have been common. Roads that once were state highways are now non-state, and city and county roads have become state highways. Also the state highway numbers and Federal Aid numbers are not the same as the route numbers that you see on the roads. With books going back eight decades, even some familiar roads have different alignments.
