Environmental Product Declarations

What is an EPD?

An EPD is an environmental declaration providing quantified environmental data using predetermined parameters and, where relevant, additional environmental information. (ISO 14025: 2006). Put more simply, an EPD describes the environmental impact of a specific product similar to a food nutrition label.

Why is ODOT requiring Environmental Product Declarations?

The Oregon Legislature passed House Bill 4139 (2022). Its intention is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from materials and fuels used by the Department of Transportation. The legislation requires ODOT to collect EPDs. This information helps inform agency decisions that reduce GHG emissions without sacrificing performance. ODOT will apply EPD information to understand current construction practices better. By understanding our use of local and regional resources and technologies, we'll strive to improve highway construction projects across Oregon's different regions and districts.
