Adult Basic Skills (ABS) Professional Development

Oregon community college partners and other Adult Basic Skills (ABS) providers can find information here on professional development resources. The Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) Office of Community Colleges and Workforce Development (CCWD) is committed to providing research-based professional development that will assist Oregon’s ABS programs in meeting their educational and career development goals.

Background

Professional development for ABS faculty, staff, and administrators is available on a local, state, and national level. Our approach is evidence-based and centered on collaboration between providers, the state, and other Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) partners. Our goal is to improve the quality of instruction and subsequent student outcomes within WIOA programs across the state. Learn more below.

Professional Development Resources

  • ABS Professional Development Handbook - curated state and national resources for Title II professional development aligned to the focus areas identified in the Professional Development Plan & Framework for 2022-2027.
  • ABS Professional Development Calendar - information and registration for all statewide, facilitated professional development events by month.
  • Oregon ABS Conference - this annual event brings together professionals committed to advancing adult basic skills and high school equivalency education. 
  • Oregon ABS Canvas - self-study courses on learning standards, distance and digital education, and a Title II community of practice. To access and enroll in courses, email ashley.garrigan@hecc.oregon.gov
  • Oregon ABS Learning Standards - the Oregon Adult College and Career Readiness Standards (OACCRS) for Language Arts and Math, and the Oregon Adult English Language Proficiency Standards (OAELPS) for ESOL. These sets of standards incorporate the National College and Career Readiness Standards and the English Language Proficiency Standards along with elements specific to Oregon.
