At DCBS, we value the diversity of our workforce. In November, we recognize and celebrate National Native American Heritage Month. We recognize and celebrate the traditions and histories, as well as acknowledge the important contributions our Native American staff members bring to our organization.

Years before explorers stepped foot on what would come to be known as the Americas, the expansive territory was inhabited by Native Americans. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, as more explorers sought to colonize their land, Native Americans responded in various stages, from cooperation to indignation to revolt. See timeline.

Native Americans lived throughout North and South America. In the United States, there were Native Americans in Alaska, Hawaii, and the mainland of the U.S. Different tribes and cultures lived in different areas. In the middle of the country lived the Plains Indians, including tribes such as the Comanche and Arapaho. In the Southeast area of the country lived tribes such as the Cherokee and the Seminole.

The Power of Tribal History/Shared History

“It’s an invitation and an opportunity to teach the rich history of our land and its people and to pair the strengths of our education system, teachers, and students with the new knowledge and content the curriculum will establish,” says Shadiin Garcia who partnered with an Education Northwest team and Oregon Department of Education to create the curriculum.
