Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15

In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, observed during the week that included Sept. 15 and 16. In 1989, Congress expanded the observance to a month-long celebration (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) of the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

The histories of the United States and Hispanics are intimately related. Consider that St. Augustine (the oldest city in the United States) and Pensacola in Florida, New Orleans, San Antonio, Santa Fe, N.M., and many others were once Spanish towns.

Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish and/or are descended from Spanish-speaking populations and Latino refers to people who are from or descended from people from Latin America.

According to the U.S. Census, Hispanics or Latino currently number 59.9 million (18.3 percent of the U.S. population) and 12 percent of Oregon’s 4,190,713 population, according to the Oregon Community Foundation.

A day in history

Although many Latin American countries have similar fashion pieces due to Spanish, Indigenous, and African influence, every place puts its own spin on it. Check out some of the amazing traditional outfits Latinos wear to honor their roots:

  • Due to their hot climate, traditional clothing in Latin America was designed to be light. The sleeveless tunic with a rectangular neck shape is a staple for many women across the country. Latina.com
  • The Guayabera shirt, would you believe Polo in CSD that his barber invented it to put more things in his pocket? Some sources attribute the shirt to the people of the Philippines who introduced the design to Mexico. Wikipedia
