Pride Month

The pride flag is composed of the following colors: Stacked bars of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple with an overlap

This month, we recognize all the DCBS fathers, stepfathers, LBGTQ+ fathers, and fathers of LBGTQ+ and their paternal bonds, as well the influence and sacrifices fathers play in current society.

Pride Month’s beginning was in late June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. The Greenwich Village establishment catered to a largely LBGTQ+ community and, as a result, was raided by police on the morning of June 28. In response, patrons rioted against the intrusion, and the results of the protest went down in history as the Stonewall Riots. While many of the riots were violent and spontaneously planned, the uprising led to reforms and global awareness of human rights for the LGBTQ+ community. The Stonewall Riots also led to the first gay pride marches, which took place a year later in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago. Pride parades and festivals later erupted throughout the world. In many countries today, the entire month of June is designated as Pride Month in support of same-sex marriage and LGBTQ rights.

Pride flag: The original pride flag was created by Gilbert Baker, an activist from Kansas, and was flown for the first time in 1978 at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade. There are many versions out there, but the main modern-day flag bears six meaningful colors (red = life; orange = healing; yellow = sunlight; green = nature; blue = harmony; and purple = spirit.

With the temperatures projected to reach triple digits this weekend, be careful in the heat. Make sure to drink a lot of fluids and be in the shade as much as possible.
