Youth adjudicated as a juvenile in Oregon are not required to register as a sex offender at the time of adjudication.
Before termination of OYA supervision, each youth will be scheduled to appear in court for what is called a sex offender determination hearing. If the judge determines that the youth will be required to register as a sex offender, the youth will be able to request relief of registration after a two-year wait period and after completing certain requirements (read more on our
Relief Hearings page). A youth can waive their right to a hearing, but then they will be required to register as a sex offender.
Juveniles adjudicated for a misdemeanor sex crime are not required to register.
At the determination hearing, the youth must be able to show they have changed their behavior, are rehabilitated, and do not pose a risk to the safety of the public.
