Groundwater investigations characterize the water budgets of groundwater reservoirs, document the interaction between groundwater and surface water, determine annual recharge, and calculate the current demands on the aquifer. Investigations assess locations where groundwater levels show decline, identify areas where local geology or anticipated growth suggests the resource may soon begin to show signs of stress, and recommend groundwater management options. The Department has completed cooperative basin studies in three areas (Deschutes, Willamette, and Klamath) and is currently working with the U.S. Geological Survey to study the Harney Basin.
