About Champoeg State Heritage Area

Champoeg features a unique combination of history, nature, and recreation. This is the site where Oregon’s first provisional government was formed by a historic vote in 1843. Situated on the south bank of the scenic Willamette River, Champoeg’s acres of forest, fields, and wetlands represent the landscape of a bygone era.

One of Oregon's earliest parks, the project upgrades outlined below will continue to keep the park a prime camping destination.

Project

Camping is popular statewide and the project underway at Champoeg will add more campsites to the north Willamette Valley, as well as upgrade old and outdated utilities.

  • Add additional RV sites, cabins, and a restroom/shower building.

Short-term visitor impact

  • B-loop closure in Fall/Winter 2025
  • A-loop and group camp possible temporary short-term closures in 2025 for utilitiy connections

Milestones

  • Feasibility Assessment Phase -- 95 percent complete.
    • Utility and park system assessments
    • Cultural and ecological assessments
    • Terrain and land use evaluations
  • Expansion layout plan complete

Next steps

  • Finalize design.
  • Design camping locations based on feasibility assessments.
The current general obligation bond estimate is $4-5 million.

General Obligation Bonds Overview

The 2021 Oregon Legislature passed SB 5506 that approved general obligation bonds to revitalize parks and campgrounds. The Oregon State Parks and Recreation Commission approved a preliminary list of projects in November 2021.

The project at Champoeg State Heritage Area was one of the projects approved to receive funds from bond sales.
