Bikeways, Waterways, Trails

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department oversees the designation process and management of the Scenic Bikeways, Scenic Waterways and Scenic and Recreational Trail programs.

Scenic Bikeways

In 2009, Oregon became the first state to develop a statewide Scenic Bikeway program. Local supporters nominate potential scenic bikeways, which are then reviewed by a statewide advisory committee of cyclists, regional tourism providers and regional partners. Once designated the local supporters help maintain and promote the routes.

Scenic Waterways

The Oregon Legislature directed OPRD to periodically study new waterways for potential inclusion in the scenic waterway program (ORS 390.855). OPRD analyzes potential waterway segments, which includes an assessment to determine eligibility, as well as evaluating issues and concerns regarding the potential designation.

Scenic and Regional Trails

The trail designation program highlights Scenic Trails that showcase and provide access to Oregon’s outstanding natural features and Regional Trails that create connections in and around communities. The Oregon Recreation Trails Advisory Council (ORTAC) and OPRD evaluate designation proposals from land managers or their proponents.
