Conferences & Workshops

Oregon Heritage coordinates several different opportunities for trainings, workshops, and conversations supporting heritage preservation efforts in Oregon. We do this through the following:

​This conference is an opportunity for those involved in preserving Oregon's heritage to gather together for three days of workshops, sessions, conversations, and more to help support their efforts and provide opportunities for conversation about larger heritage related issues. The conference also includes the annual Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards.

​In the off year of the conference, Oregon Heritage hosts a summit. The purpose of the summit is to be single issue focused and to provide an opportunity for larger scale discussions to take place at the state-wide level and regional level. Previous year summits have focused on fundraising (2017), Board development (2019), collaboration (2021), and volunteers (2023).

In a time where heritage organizations statewide are facing similar ongoing challenges such as funding, capacity, political and community investment, and more how can these be addressed beyond the individual organization? Heritage organizations are impacted by laws, policies, and budgets at all government levels and, together as a strong network, have the opportunity and power to influence those decisions to better support heritage preservation and their organizations. Join us as we dive into the role of advocacy in shaping policies and laws and how heritage organizations of all sizes can participate.

The summit will address:

  • Understanding the impact of advocacy as an individual organization and as a group with shared needs and interests.
  • Being aware of and taking action to influence related polies, laws, funding, etc.
  • Discovering mechanisms and organizations that support this work in Oregon and nationally.
  • Discussing individual organization’s internal processes and communications to help determine a decision making path for if, when, and how to engage in this work.

​This conference provides the opportunity for those engaged in downtown revitalization efforts to connect to resources, partners, and their downtown to help get work done in their community. Typical attendees include staff and volunteers focused on downtown historic preservation and economic development, downtown business and property owners, government leaders, chamber of commerce professionals and volunteers, and others with an interest in the future of downtown will benefit from attending this conference.

2024 Fall Workship Series

Collections Assessments & Care Basics
Whether you're a small collecting institution just getting started with managing your collection, or a well seasoned museum professional just looking for a refresher, this workshop is for you. Dedicated members of the Oregon Heritage MentorCorps team join together to present content that reflects basic core skills and principles of museum operation. Learning how to correctly assess your collection, and then caring for the contents is key to successful stewardship of history and strong maintenance of public trust for your institution. This workshop will share resources for how to conduct an assessment, how to tie that assessment into larger strategic planning efforts, and how to move from assessment to triage and basic care and maintenance. 

Each of these sessions offered will contain the same content, with the primary difference being in presenters, presenter backgrounds, and presenting styles.
