How to Order On the General Microbiology Test Request Form (OHA0060), in the “Miscellaneous Testing” section, check the “Other” box and write in "CRE Screening."

Specimen Collection Details

CollectionCollect rectal swabs from contacts of CRE-positive patient contacts using the eSwab collection kit provided by OSPHL.

Insert the tip of the swab into the anal canal and turn the swab 2-3 times.

Insert the swab into the eSwab media container (tube of liquid), breaking the shaft at the breaking point, marked by colored ink, by pressing it against the rim of the tube.

Handling

Store specimens at refrigerated temperatures (2-8°C) pending transport.

Do not freeze, avoid extreme heat.

Specimens must be received at the laboratory within 72 hours of collection.

Transport

Transport specimens for receipt at the laboratory within 72 hours of specimen collection.

Package specimens with fully frozen ice packs to maintain refrigerated temperatures during transport.

Rejection CriteriaPreserved or unpreserved raw stool. 

Specimens are subject to the requirements of the OSPHL Specimen Submission Policy (pdf).
Comments Original material submitted for testing is retained for 5 calendar days after receipt at the laboratory.
