Specimen Collection Details |
Collection | Collect as soon as possible after symptoms develop. Specimens may be collected up to three weeks after illness onset, as long as antibiotics have not been started. Collect nasopharyngeal (NP) specimen using a Dacron tip swab on a flexible wire shaft and submit in a Regan-Lowe transport media. Collect using standard nasopharyngeal collection technique using one swab through one nostril to the post-nasopharynx. Rotate the swab several times before removing the swab. Place the swab into a tube containing Regan-Lowe transport media. Snip off the end of the swab and securely cap the container. Instructions for collecting specimens are available from COPANusa via video or PDF. Nasal aspirates in a sterile tube or container are accepted but are not preferred. |
Optimal Volume | N/A |
Minimum Volume | N/A |
Handling | Store NP specimens in Regan-Lowe transport media at refrigerated temperatures
(2-8°C) pending transport. Nasal aspirates should also be stored at refrigerated temperatures. |
Transport |
Package specimens with fully frozen ice packs to maintain refrigerated temperatures during transport. Transport for receipt at the OSPHL within 3 calendar days of specimen collection. |
Rejection Criteria | Specimens received more than 3 calendar days after date of collection, non-nasopharyngeal specimens, or specimens not submitted in appropriate transport media. |
Comments |
Original material submitted for testing is retained for 3 calendar days after receipt at the laboratory.
Culture and PCR testing will be routinely performed and reported on all specimens for
B. pertussis, parapertussis, and holmseii.
