About this toolkit

Chemicals found in cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting products can be hazardous to health if they are not used properly. Children are particularly vulnerable to potential health effects from chemicals in these products.

This toolkit contains sample social media messages for a variety of safe cleaning and disinfecting topics that you can tailor to fit the needs of your organization and audiences. Don't forget to use hashtags and include a link to our website: http://safecleaningtoolkit.oregon.gov/

This toolkit was developed by the Oregon Choose Safe Places program. Visit our webpage to learn more about how to make your environment safer for kids: www.HealthOregon.org/ChooseSafePlaces.

Social media tips

Social media can be used as a strategic communications tool to disseminate health information by expanding reach, fostering engagement, and increasing access to credible, science-based health messages. Below are some tips for sharing messages and content on social media platforms.

  1. Keep your messages short and simple: Audiences will scroll past messages that are too long to easily read and digest
  2. Tailor your messages: Modify messages so that they are interesting and compelling to the audience you’re targeting
  3. Use the appropriate platform: Make sure your target audience uses the social media platform where you’re sharing your messages
  4. Use hashtags: Hashtags help make content discoverable in social media platform searches, which will help your message reach more people. Tag your topics and your partner organizations
  5. Provide links for more information: This will help keep your messages short but also provide a pathway for folks that are interested to learn more
  6. Make a calendar for your posts: Posting at a regular frequency increases your visibility and engagement
  7. Know your organization’s policy: Know how you should post, comment, or respond through social media before you make a post
  8. Monitor and evaluate your posts: Identify which posts get the most views and shares to help inform your future communication strategies
