Next Generation 9-1-1

While the existing 9-1-1 system has been a success story for more than 30 years, it has been stretched to its limit as technology advances.

New wireless and Internet Protocol (IP)-based communications devices are being developed at a rapid rate, offering capabilities such as text and video messaging. Unfortunately, the current 9-1-1 system was never intended to receive information from these new and emerging devices.

As a result, through cumbersome adaptations, current 9-1-1 systems are being asked to perform functions it was not designed to handle. In short, Oregon’s 9-1-1 system is in need of significant modernization.

The first step in the modernization process was to design and deploy an IP-based Network, connecting all 43 Oregon Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs). This network currently supports the delivery of caller location information to all 9-1-1 centers throughout Oregon. Further planning is underway to fully modernize 9-1-1 services throughout Oregon.

Given the critical nature of 9-1-1, Oregon’s planning leverages a phased approach that minimizes risk to 9-1-1 services and investments. This approach builds upon activities that will modernize Oregon’s 9-1-1 system.
