Fallen Hero Memorial Highways

The 2013 legislature passed a law (HB 3494 & HB2708) that honored five individuals who were killed in the line of duty while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States. 

The 2015 legislature passed a law (HB 2389) to honor those who were killed in action or who died as a result of wounds received in action while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States. 

In 2021, the law expanded (HB2700) to allow POW/MIA candidates to be eligible for a sign without a concurrent resolution.  

The law sets up a program to allow for a roadside memorial sign to be installed on a state highway to commemorate fallen heroes.

Guidelines

Memorial signs may be installed for those individuals who were killed in action and who have been recognized by the Oregon Legislature through a concurrent resolution or POW/MIA recognized by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and the remains of the individual have been recovered, identifies and returned to Oregon. HB 2389 defines the Armed Forces.

To begin the process to have a memorial sign installed, please contact your state Senator or Representative to request he or she sponsor a concurrent resolution for the fallen hero. Application Procedure

After the legislature adopts a concurrent resolution, complete the application form and send along with a check or money order payable to the Oregon Department of Transportation for $600 to:
