Travel Car-Free


While driving over the age of 50 may not always be an option, aging doesn’t necessarily mean we have to give up our independence.  The resources below can help us maintain our independence once we are no longer driving.


​Walking, using a wheelchair, or bicycling are great ways to get to your destination independently. ​Learn more about our Bicycle and Pedestrian Program including planning your trip​.

There are several resources available to help make using public transportation easier, even for vacation travel within Oregon, including:
  • ODOT’s Plan a Car-Free trip ‒ where you can plan a trip on public transportation, find information about dial-a-ride service, and more.
  • ODOT's Get There Oregon ‒ an easy-to-use carpool matching tool and trip planner that will get you where you need to go. The online tool will give you carpool, vanpool, walk, bike and transit options to your destination.
  • ODOT's Transit & Taxi Provider Finder ‒ locate Oregon transit services and taxi companies by region, including dial-a-ride services and other transportation services for people with special needs (Transportation Brokerages).
  • Top Car-Free Getaways in Oregon ‒ see iconic Pacific Northwest sights car-free.
  • ADA Accessibility Request Form - provide feedback or make a request for ODOT to address accessibility issues.  For assistance, contact Ask ODOT: 888-275-6368. See ODOT’s Accessibility webpage​ for more information about Accessibility through ODOT.

There are also resources available just for getting to healthcare appointments.
  • For members of Oregon’s Medicaid program, the Oregon Health Plan, contact your Coordinated Care Organization for travel assistance.  To find who your Coordinated Care Organization is, call the Oregon Health Plan’s member services information line: 800-699-9075.
  • For veterans, schedule a free ride to your appointment with the Disabled American Veterans Van.
