Construction Staging and Impacts

What You Can Expect

Let's take a look at what building this roundabout will look like! The contractor will build it in stages. Each stage requires either shifting traffic or restricting access to local roads.

The major stages are:

  • Build a temporary bypass road.
  • Build the roundabout.
  • Build the OR 6 portions of the road to tie into the roundabout and remove the bypass road.
  • Build the Aerts Road connections to the roundabout.

The details for each stage, what traffic shifts or access closures are needed are all detailed in the construction staging section.

Impacts

Overall, during construction you can expect:

  • Work to happen during the day.
  • Traffic shifted onto a bypass road.
  • Potential shoulder and lane closures on OR 6.
  • Access restrictions or closures to/from:
    • NW Aerts Road.
    • NW Washington Avenue.
  • Local traffic to use of alternate routes.
  • Delays.
  • Construction noise:
    • Equipment moving or digging dirt.
    • Trucks entering and leaving the area.

Schedule

Construction is estimated to start later this year and complete by the end of 2026.

Construction Staging

The plan is to build a bypass road ➡️ shift traffic onto the bypass road ➡️ build a roundabout ➡️ connect roads to the roundabout ➡️ open traffic on the roundabout ➡️ build the south portion of NW Aerts Road connection ➡️ open the roundabout to traffic. See below for details.

A temporary bypass road will be built to the south of OR 6. This will allow traffic to flow continuously while the roundabout is being built.

With paving and striping being weather dependent, building this road will be one of the first things done when construction starts later this year.

The temporary bypass road will be two lanes, one lane for each direction of traffic.

There are several times during construction that traffic will need to shift:

  • Once the bypass road is built, traffic from OR 6 will be shifted onto the temporary bypass road so construction can start on the roundabout.
    • At this time, we estimate traffic will shift to the bypass road in spring 2026.
  • Once the roundabout is built, traffic will shift again. Either both directions of traffic will fully use the roundabout, or a partial shift could be needed to make the road connections on OR 6.
    • If a short-term partial shift is needed, westbound traffic would use the roundabout and the eastbound traffic would stay on the bypass road.
    • After the partial shift eastbound traffic will move from the bypass road to the roundabout. At which time, the southern NW Aerts Road access will be closed temporarily while the connection to the roundabout is being built.

OR 6 traffic will shift onto the bypass road while the roundabout is being built. During this stage:

  • NW Washington Avenue access to NW Aerts Road and OR 6 will close permanently. Portions of the road will be removed.
  • NW Aerts Road, north of OR 6, will temporarily be closed. There will be no access to or from OR 6 during this stage.
    • Note: NW Aerts Road, north and south of OR 6, will close at different times.
  • Sidewalks and paths will be built on the north portion of the roundabout.

Road closures or restrictions during construction:

  • NW Aerts Road:
    • North of OR 6 – The road will close to the north of the project. There will be no access to and from OR 6 during the roundabout construction stage.
    • South of OR 6 – The road will close later in the project as the last step to connect it to the roundabout after it is built.
      • For local access – Wilkesboro Road can be used as an alternate route.
  • NW Washington Avenue connection to NW Aerts Road and OR 6 is being removed.
  • OR 6:
    • Access to north NW Aerts Road will be closed during construction of the roundabout.
    • Access to south NW Aerts Road will be closed when building the road connection to the roundabout.

When construction to the roundabout is almost done, the tie-in connection to the southern portion of NW Aerts Road will need to be built.

During this stage, the contractor could fully shift traffic onto the roundabout or they could use a partial traffic shift. If they decide to use the partial shift, as shown in the diagram

  • Eastbound traffic will remain on the temporary bypass road.
  • Westbound traffic will be shifted onto the new roundabout.
    • Northern NW Aerts Road traffic will be able to access OR 6.
    • OR 6 traffic will be able to make right turns onto NW Aerts Road.

Once the OR 6 connections are made, traffic will be shifted completely off of the bypass road and both directions will use the newly constructed roundabout.

At this time, the southern portion of NW Aerts Road will close so construction can start to connect it to the roundabout.

This is the last stage of construction once traffic is shifted back onto OR 6.

During this stage:

  • The southern portion of NW Aerts Road will close while the road and connections to the roundabout are being built.
  • The temporary bypass road will be removed.
  • Curb ramps and sidewalks on the southern side will be completed.
  • For local access – Wilkesboro Road can be used as an alternate route.
