CFR Bill Signing Ceremony Remarks (Spanish)

Good morning. Thank you all for being here today to celebrate a truly historic accomplishment.
Often, the word “historic” can feel overused. But I know for a fact that there were many people – including myself at times – who thought getting campaign contribution limits through the legislature would never happen.
But, we are here today to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts that have led to House Bill 4024 in this year’s legislative session, bringing Oregon into the company of 45 other states that have campaign contribution limits.
Less than four years ago, nearly 80% of Oregon voters sent a clear message that it was time for these limits when they amended the Oregon Constitution to allow for them.
For years, many of the people in this room brought differing, valid perspectives to the table on what campaign finance reform should look like here in Oregon. I want to acknowledge that these conversations have not been easy. Even in the pursuit of a common goal that the vast majority of Oregonians support, there were endless possibilities for how campaign finance reform could look.
The details matter – and I truly believe this bill will strengthen transparency and confidence in Oregon’s elections.
I want to thank the legislators – particularly Speaker Fahey and Leader Helfrich – who worked so hard to forge a bipartisan compromise.
I also want to specifically acknowledge the efforts of Leader Knopp and former Speaker Rayfield for their long-standing commitment to this cause. Your efforts over many years helped make this all possible.
Further, I greatly appreciate the way that representatives from labor and business groups, alongside good government and c4 organizations, came together and recognized the urgency of the moment to make this much-needed change happen.
This moment represents the best of what is possible when people with differing viewpoints, but a common goal, thoughtfully come together and provide the leadership Oregonians have called for.
I’ll close by once again saying thank you to everyone who came to the table to deliver historic reform to our campaign finance laws.

Buenos días. Gracias a todos ustedes por estar aquí hoy para celebrar este logro verdaderamente histórico.
Con frecuencia, la palabra “histórico” se siente desgastada. Pero sé con certeza que hubo mucha gente —incluso a veces yo misma— que pensaba que establecer límites a las contribuciones para las campañas por medio de la legislatura nunca ocurriría.
Pero, hoy estamos aquí para reconocer y celebrar los esfuerzos que han llevado al Proyecto de Ley 4024 a la sesión legislativa de este año, colocando a Oregon en la compañía de otros 45 estados que tienen límites en las contribuciones para las campañas.
Hace menos de cuatro años, cerca del 80% de los votantes de Oregon enviaron el mensaje claro de que era el momento de establecer esos límites cuando reformaron la constitución para permitirlos.
Durante años, muchas de las personas en este recinto, trajeron a la mesa perspectivas diferentes y válidas sobre cómo debería ser la reforma del financiamiento de campañas aquí en Oregon. Quiero reconocer que estas conversaciones no han sido fáciles. Incluso en la búsqueda de una meta común que apoyara la vasta mayoría de los habitantes de Oregon, había infinidad de posibilidades sobre cómo podría ser la reforma del financiamiento de campañas.
Los detalles importan y yo creo sinceramente que esta ley fortalecerá la transparencia y la confianza en las elecciones de Oregon.
Quiero agradecer a los legisladores —en particular a la presidenta Fahey y al líder Helfrich— quienes trabajaron muy duro para forjar un compromiso bipartidista.
También quiero reconocer específicamente los esfuerzos del líder Knopp y del expresidente Rayfield por su compromiso duradero con esta causa. Sus esfuerzos a través de muchos años ayudaron a hacer que todo esto fuera posible.
Además, agradezco enormemente la manera en que los representantes de grupos sindicales y empresariales, junto con la buena gobernanza y las organizaciones c4, se reunieron y reconocieron la urgencia del momento para hacer realidad este cambio tan necesario.
Este momento representa lo mejor de lo que es posible lograr cuando personas con diferentes puntos de vista, pero con una meta común, conscientemente se unen y brindan el liderazgo que los habitantes de Oregon han pedido.
Terminaré diciendo una vez más gracias a todos los que se reunieron a la mesa para hacer entrega de una histórica reforma a nuestras leyes de financiamiento de campañas.
