How do I apply for a new Trainee Polygraph Examiner License?

  • Provide proof of graduation from a polygraph examiners course approved by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training or provide documentation of military experience or training that the department determines is substantially equivalent to the education required. 

  • Complete a Form PL-1 Application for Trainee Polygraph Examiner License, have your fingerprints taken and pay the required fees.  Submit all of these items together as one packet to DPSST.

Please note:  Applicants for licensure as a polygraph examiner or trainee who are not residents of this state must provide an irrevocable written consent with the application for a license or renewal permitting the Director to act as an agent for the service of all legal process in this state.

How do I apply for a General Polygraph Examiners License?

The application packet for a General Polygraph Examiner License must include:

  • Complete all requirements of a Trainee Polygraph Examiner.

  • Submit a completed Form PL-1 Application for Polygraph Exmainer License, and fees to the Program.

  • Successfully pass a closed-book examination.

Please note:  Applicants for licensure as a polygraph examiner or trainee who are not residents of this state must provide an irrevocable written consent with the application for a license or renewal permitting the Director to act as an agent for the service of all legal process in this state.

How do I apply to renew a Trainee Polygraph Examiner License?

The application packet for renewal of a polygraph examiner or trainee license must include:

  • ​A completed application Form PL-21;

  • The required license renewal fee as prescribed in OAR 259-020-0220; and

  • Documentation of current knowledge, skills or abilities as a polygraph examiner or trainee.

  • For the purpose of this rule, documentation of current knowledge, skills or abilities as a polygraph examiner or trainee may be satisfied by:Completing continuing education requirements pursuant to OAR 259-020-0160; or​​

  • ​​​Achieving a passing score on an examination for licensure conducted by the Department.

The fees required for Polygraph Examiner Licensure are:

  • $50.00 Licensing Fee - Yearly renewal

  • $46.25 Criminal History Background Check Fee

  • $50.00 Exam Fee (per testing attempt)

Fingerprinting Options:

Option One - Electronic fingerprinting via Fieldprint     


Submit electronic fingerprints via Fieldprint, Inc.  Fieldprint provides all aspects of the fingerprinting process from electronic collection to sending the collected fingerprints to OSP/FBI for processing - eliminating the need for submission of a fingerprint card to the department.  In addition, Fieldprint offers nationwide fingerprinting services within a reasonable distance from any location.  Please visit: www.fieldprintoregon.com​ for more information and to schedule an appointment.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - PLEASE NOTE:

  1. Be Sure to enter the correct Fieldprint code (code is listed above) when scheduling your appointment.  Entry of an incorrect code will result in the rejection of your prints and you will be required to reschedule and repeat the fingerprint process; which will include repayment of the electronic fingerprint fee charged by Fieldprint Inc; and

  2. Once you have completed the process of scheduling an appointment with Fieldprint, Inc., you will be provided with a Confirmation Page.  You must include a copy of your Confirmation Page with your application (Form PL-1) upon submission to DPSST.​

Option Two - LiveScan fingerprinting     


Submit a LiveScan fingerprint card to the department.  LiveScan is an inkless electronic fingerprinting method where fingerprints are scanned and saved as a digital image, then printed onto a fingerprint card.  When done properly, LiveScan can have a greater success rate than the traditional ink method.  However, LiveScan is not available in all areas.

Submit a completed ink and roll fingerprint card to the Program.
