Map Components

HazVu interface

The components and functionality of the DOGAMI Statewide Geohazards Viewer are explained individually below.

Zoom Controls

Zoom and Pan control

Zoom controls allow you to navigate around the map. The viewer opens at 1:9,244,649 scale. You can zoom in to 1:9,028 scale.

Return to the full extent by clicking on the house button. Move around the map by left-clicking mouse and holding down the mouse and dragging the cursor.

Select/Show/Hide Hazard and Asset Layers

To learn more about the data layers, see Hazards and Assets. Be sure to read the Limitations

Both the "Choose layers to display" and the "Layers Currently Showing" windows display information about data layers. You can change which layers to display by using the "Choose layers to display" window. The "Layers Currently Showing" window shows only the layers being displayed, so it acts like a legend for the current mapview; you may find this more convenient than scrolling through the "Choose layers to display" window.

Both windows are open by default when you open the viewer. No Group layers are initially checked. Choose layers by checking boxes to the left of the layers. To expand a layer and see particular kinds of hazards, click on the plus sign to the left of the layer. All sublayer choices for a layer appear when the layer is expanded. To display a sublayer layer on the map, make sure both the sublayer AND its group layer are checked on.

  • Move the legend window around the screen by left-clicking and holding down the mouse, then moving the cursor to reposition the legend box.
  • Resize the window by positioning the cursor in the lower right corner of the legend box until the double-arrow cursor appears. Then left-click and hold down the mouse while dragging the cursor.
  • Close the window by clicking the "X" in the upper right corner of the box.
  • Collapse a single layer by clicking on the down-pointing arrow to the left of the layer name.
Show/hide the symbol(s) for a sublayer in the legend by clicking on the right-pointing arrow to the left of the sublayer name.

Scale Bar and Latitude & Longitude

FEMA Coos County scale bar

The scale bar provides an approximate scale in miles for the map. To change the scale, use the Zoom Controls

The latitude and longitude in decimal degrees of the cursor's current position on the map are also shown.

Overview Map

HZAVU location map

A gray box on the small overview map in the lower right corner shows the extent of the large map area. Click-and-drag in the overview map area to change the focus of the large map. Click on the small arrow on the overview map to minimize the overview map frame. Maximize the frame of the overview map by clicking the symbol with the four outward-pointing arrows.

Base Map Options

FEMA Coos Base maps

There are many base map options. All basemaps can be selected at all scales but will not necessarily show data at each scale. These map services can help you look at the hazard data in different ways. For example:

Light Gray Canvas (default): The Esri "Light Gray Canvas" map service focuses attention on the data layers by providing a neutral background with minimal colors, labels, and features.

Data Source

Imagery:The "World Imagery" map service provides satellite imagery that is the most photograph-like of the basemap options. It can help you see the hazard data on top of "real-world" features.

DataSource

Topographic: The "National Geographic World Map" service provides a a map that shows the topography of the land (without contours). It can help you see the hazard data on slopes and channels.
Data Source

DOGAMI Lidar: In addition to the basemap options, you can turn on highest-hit or bare earth lidar layers from the layers panel. Lidar technology provides very precise, accurate, and high-resolution images of the surface of the earth, vegetation, and the built environment. Lidar is an essential tool in helping Oregon better understand natural hazards and resources, and also manage and plan enhancements to water systems, roads, open space, and ecosystems. address finder

Controls allow you enter an address and zoom to it; to show/hide map layers; change the basemap; print a portion of the current map extent; make measurements, and see the legend for currently selected layers.

Select/Show/Hide Hazard and Asset Layers. See the Layers section above.

Print Your Map: Print the current extent of the map. Clicking the icon causes a popup box to appear. Enter a name for your map view, then click the "Print " button to display a Print dialog box. Choose printer settings as you normally would for your printer setup.

Measurement: You can measure areas and distances on the map, or get the latitude and longitude of a point. Click on the Measurement tool button, then select Area, Distance, or Location as the type of measurement. Select the units to be used for the measurement. To clear a measurement, double-click again.

Then click on the map to start the measurement. Move the cursor, then click once to end a line, or for an area click repeatedly to create the area shape. Double-click to end the measurement.

Get the Latitude and Longitude of a Location

Click on the Measurement tool button, then the Location button. On the map, click where you want to see the coordinates. The green marker shows the coordinates where you clicked, while cursor shows your present cursor location.

Enter address and zoom to it: Use this tool to zoom to a location by entering a street address, including city and "OR" or "Oregon". You can also enter the city and state, such as "Bend, Oregon". A list will display that shows possible address matches. Select the one you want.

In the example below, the user has entered "100 Main St., Portland, OR" in the Address field and then selected 100 SE Main St. from the list of possible addresses.

The map recenters to the selected address and displays a popup pointing to the address.

multiple search results

If the address is a State Owned/Leased Facility and you have the Buildings > State Owned/Leased Facility layer turned on, you can click on the Critical Facility icon on the map to display information. Click on the RVS Report link at to open a PDF of the RVS (rapid visual screening) report for that facility in a new browser window. Use this tool to locate/identify schools, hospitals, and fire and police stations throughout the State of Oregon. RVS reports are the result of the Statewide Seismic Needs Assessment Using Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) [Senate Bill 2 (2005)] conducted by DOGAMI.

A handy list of State Owned/Leased Facility buildings (circa 2007) is provided as Public Buildings with Seismic RVS Site Summary Reports
