Materials Management takes a holistic approach to reducing environmental impacts by looking at a product's entire life cycle—from raw materials extraction through manufacture, use and end-of-life management. Research shows that for many products the majority of environmental impacts take place before a product even reaches a consumer. In Oregon, 41 percent of the state’s GHG emissions are attributable to our consumption of materials in a variety of product forms. This section of the website highlights key efforts that explore the impacts associated with materials used in the state, and offers insight in how to reduce them.
