REAL ID Information

Get the REAL ID option next time you renew your license. Appointments may be available but are not required.

As of May 7, 2025, the federal government requires every person 18 years and older to present a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative – like a government-issued passport, passport card or military ID – to board a commercial U.S. flight. REAL ID is also required to access certain federal facilities like military bases or nuclear plants. Oregon offers both standard issue and REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses, instruction permits and identification cards. If you aren’t flying soon, you can wait to get a REAL ID until it’s time to renew your credential or use a passport.

Due to our funding crisis and a hiring freeze, customers dropping in at a DMV office can expect longer wait times with no guarantee they can be served that day. Making an appointment on DMV2U is your best assurance for in-office service. If you don’t need a REAL ID, see if you can complete your service online at DMV2U.Oregon.gov.

After DMV accepts and scans your submitted documents, you’ll be given a temporary paper ID. TSA will not accept the temporary paper ID at security. It takes up to three weeks to receive your REAL ID card in the mail, so make sure your identification is REAL ID-compliant in advance of your trip.

What is REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license, permit or identification card that is also a federally accepted form of identification. REAL ID cards are marked with a star in the upper right corner. As of May 7, 2025, everyone 18 and older must show REAL ID or other federally accepted identification at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints and certain federal facilities.

How do I get a REAL ID?

1. Gather your documents.
Use DMV's interactive REAL ID document checklist to gather all of the documentation you will need to apply for your REAL ID. Please note, your current legal name must match the name on your social security card.

2. Visit a DMV office.
You must apply in person and bring the federally required documents to qualify for REAL ID. You can visit any DMV office without an appointment. However, due to funding challenges and a hiring freeze, drop-in customers can expect longer wait times with no guarantee of same-day service. For a better experience, make an appointment. New slots are made available 30 days out on a rolling hour-by-hour basis, so check back frequently. Offices differ in the number and types of appointments available.

3. Bring your documents to the DMV.
REAL ID 1-2-3: Bring one proof of identity, two proofs of address and allow three weeks to receive your card!
Be sure to bring the correct documents from your REAL ID checklist to your visit.
