New Listeria Fact Sheets
CDC has created factsheets for people at higher risk for Listeria:
The factsheets explain why Listeria is especially harmful for people in these risk groups. The factsheets also provide actionable steps people can take to prevent getting sick, including a list of foods to avoid and foods to choose instead.
It is
estimated that 48 million people get sick and 128,000 are hospitalized from foodborne disease in the U.S. each year. Common symptoms of foodborne illness are diarrhea or vomiting (gastroenteritis). Noroviruses are the most common cause. Public Health Division staff investigate foodborne gastroenteritis outbreaks and work with local health departments to notify people when outbreaks occur.

Healthy Pets, Healthy People
Keeping backyard poultry (chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, and turkeys) is becoming more popular. People enjoy raising baby poultry including chicks, ducklings, goslings, and poults. Many people keep chickens to have fresh eggs. Although keeping backyard poultry can be fun and educational, owners should be aware that poultry can sometimes carry harmful germs that make people sick.
