FHCO Reveals Housing Barriers for People with Intellectual, Developmental Disabilities

March 2025

The Fair Housing Council of Oregon (FHCO) recently conducted statewide listening sessions with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), their families, and service providers. These sessions revealed several concerning housing barriers:

  • Financial barriers, including SSI and SSDI limits, create disproportionate impacts on those with IDD.
  • Inadequate support systems can lead to preventable evictions.
  • Available housing stock lack accessible features for people with accessibility concerns beyond physical mobility concerns.
  • Housing providers and neighbors have incorrect assumptions about people with IDD.

As a real estate professional in Oregon, understanding these barriers can help you avoid fair housing violations and better serve your clients with disabilities.

FHCO will soon release new resources including a fair housing guidebook and training materials.
