Parole, Probation, and Community Services

At OYA, you can help make sure youth are successful out in the community.

Roles you can play include:
  • Juvenile Parole and Probation Officer
  • Oversight and support for youth in community treatment programs
  • Foster care certification and oversight
  • Crime victim/survivor engagement
  • Helping youth access benefits after they leave OYA custody
  • Administrative support

Every youth in OYA custody – in a facility or in the community – is assigned a Juvenile Parole and Probation Officer (JPPO). They supervise youth placed in the community and provide them with opportunities to build the skills they’ll need to live crime-free lives. They provide ongoing support for the youth to connect them with education, treatment, and jobs, and to serve as positive role models. Juvenile Parole and Probation Assistants support JPPOs in case management, supervising youth in the community, and transporting them statewide. Transition JPPOs help youth find housing or health services, enroll in education, or develop job skills when they move between placements in the community.

OYA contracts with public and private not-for-profit agencies across the state to provide residential treatment services for youth. These programs support youth until they can return home or live independently. Staff in OYA’s Community Resource Unit (CRU) serve as liaisons to the programs and JPPOs, and provide guidance, expertise, and oversight to ensure youth in these programs receive safe and effective care.

Youth in OYA custody who are supervised in the community don’t always have a safe or appropriate family home in which to live. OYA maintains a small network of foster and proctor care providers to help meet the needs of these youth. This is intended to support their continued positive development and reintegration into the community in a family home setting.

OYA’s foster care specialists recruit, train, certify, and supervise foster and proctor homes and ensure compliance with rule, policies and procedures. They are in regular contact with youth, staff in youth correctional facilities, juvenile parole and probation officers, foster and proctor parents, and community partners.

OYA is committed to communicating with crime survivors and including them – if they wish - in the rehabilitation process. To this end, OYA staff participate in restorative justice and victim dialog services, obtain survivor input on youth case planning and the release process, and provide direct services, such as accompanying crime survivors to court.

The Youth Benefits Access Team (YBAT) collaborates with agency staff and stakeholders to coordinate health care and social security benefits that aid the care of eligible youth.
