About the Program
The Oregon State Fire Marshal Technical Services Code Unit is dedicated to ensuring the safe installation and use of aboveground storage tanks. We review plans and issue installation approval permits for:
-
Flammable and Combustible Liquid Storage Tanks: Tanks with a capacity of
1,000 gallons or more, or aggregates totaling
1,000 gallons or more.
-
Liquefied Petroleum Gas: Tanks with a capacity of
2,000 gallons or more or containers with an aggregate capacity exceeding
4,000 gallons of water, as specified in
Oregon Fire Code 6101.3.
Our team assists design professionals, building and fire officials, and the general public in meeting the intent of the fire code, promoting safety and compliance across the state.
Aboveground Tank Application and Installation Guideline
The
Aboveground Tank Application and Installation Guideline provides comprehensive information on the installation of aboveground tanks used for
motor vehicle fuel dispensing. This program includes plan reviews for three types of tanks, ensuring that all installations comply with the relevant regulations.
While certain smaller tanks and containers may not require a plan review, they must still meet the installation requirements outlined in the Oregon Fire Code.
Plan Review Categories
Flammable Combustible Liquids (FCL): This category includes reviews of liquid fuels such as gasoline and diesel.
No fee is charged for this review.

Aboveground Storage Tank Application
Flammable Combustible Liquid

A list of required items to submit is included on the application form.
An application for aboveground storage tanks must be completed and submitted for approval before the tank(s) are installed. Tanks with quantities less than those mentioned above must also meet the installation requirements of the Oregon Fire Code. Incomplete applications will be rejected.
Liquefied Petroleum (Propane)
We review plans and issue installation approval permits for the aboveground storage of liquified petroleum gas above 2,000 gallons or the aggregate capacity of containers more than 4,000 gallons of water as specified in Oregon Fire Code 6101.3 and assisting design professionals, building, and fire officials as well as the general public in meeting the intent of the fire code.
Application for LPG Storage Container Tanks with quantities less than those mentioned above must also meet the installation requirements of the Oregon Fire Code. Incomplete applications will be rejected.
