Scabies

Disease Information

Scabies is an itching skin irritation caused by the human itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis). The mites dig a burrow into the upper layers of skin and cause itching; tiny, red, irregular lines just under the skin; and an allergic rash.

Disease Reporting

Scabies is not reportable a condition.

However, cases are subject to restriction on school attendance, day-care attendance, and patient care while in the communicable stage of the disease. If sufficient measures have been taken to prevent transmission, or the disease is no longer communicable, worksite, child-care and school restrictions can be removed by the local public health authority; school restrictions can be removed by a school nurse or health care provider; and health-care facility restrictions can be removed by the facility's infection control committee.
