U.S. 30: NW Bridge Ave Rockfall Emergency Repair

Project Completed

Region 1: Portland metro and Hood River County (Portland, Multnomah)

Emergency repair work is complete in response to a rockfall that occurred on January 5, 2022.  The rockfall occurred along the hillside above NW Bridge Avenue (US 30 Bypass), southeast of the west end of the St. Johns Bridge.

Impacts

Traffic Impact

Update 4/23/22:

Emergency repairs are complete. NW Bridge Avenue (U.S. 30 Bypass) is open. Thank you for your patience during our work.

Construction Impacts

The slope stabilization required installation of reinforcing anchors in the slope.

Additional time was needed due to unpredictable drilling conditions in this area, additional anchors needed due to the condition and geometry of the rock slope, and the availability of materials.

Our work crews ran two drill rigs, determined to be the safest operations for work equipment due to the limited space and work areas.

We have completed repairs as of April 23, 2022. NW Bridge Ave. (U.S. 30 Bypass) is reopened.

Schedule

Our contractor stabilized the slope, drilled, installed anchors and placed mesh and border cables on the slope before securing the anchors.

NW Bridge Ave. was repaved and restriped after work on the slope was safely stabilized.

Our schedule is subject to change based on unforeseen weather and work site conditions.

About

We performed emergency repair work in response to a rockfall that occurred on January 5, 2022. The rockfall occurred on the hillside next to NW Bridge Avenue, (U.S. 30 Bypass) southeast of the west end of the St. Johns Bridge.

Enough rock had to be removed to safely drill the anchors that will reinforce the slope. Our contractor had two drills working to install the anchors needed to reinforce the slope and anchor the pinned mesh in place. Drilling activities were challenging in this unstable rock slope area.
