About
We worked with the cities of Lyons, Scio and Mill City to study OR 226 and OR 22, state highways that travel through their communities. This effort, also known as an “urban design verification” (UDV) study, identified lower cost improvements for people biking and walking. Improvements could include new signs, marked crossings, pedestrian activated signals, etc.
The potential improvement ideas, if constructed, would make it safer and more comfortable to walk along and cross these highways on foot. The study also looked at bike lanes and intersection safety improvements, as well as other issues brought up by the public and stakeholders.
Why is this study happening now?
We studied these highways to understand potential designs before future maintenance or other projects are planned for the area. With this study, we will look for funding to include the improvements along with other necessary work to make best use of our limited resources. For example, if we have a project to update the curb ramps, we may be able to also improve pedestrian crossings with new striping and signs that make it safer to cross the street. We defined these desired improvements as part of the UDV study so that they can be easily implemented later as opportunities arise.
