About

This project is Phase 3 of the multi-phased U.S. 97 Redmond to Bend Safety Project. Phase 1 was completed in 2022, and Phase 2 was constructed in 2024. Eventually, a center median barrier will be installed the entire stretch of U.S. 97 from Redmond to Bend.

Phase 3 will continue installation of center median barrier from the existing raised median at the Yew Avenue Interchange in Redmond south to Quarry Avenue.

In addition, this phase will construct a J-turn north of Quarry Avenue on the east side of U.S. 97 to accommodate turnarounds in order to reduce the time people must travel out of direction due to the median barrier. Shoulder widening will be included in this area to develop the necessary width for the southbound left turn pocket that accesses the J-turn.

U.S. 97 between Yew Avenue (mile point 124) and Quarry Avenue (mile point 126).

Cost and Funding

$4.68 million

What Problem Will This Improve?

Serious injury and fatal crashes occur with increasing frequency on U.S. 97 between Bend and Redmond, with many of the most serious being head-on or crossover crashes.

Installing a center median barrier to physically separate northbound and southbound travel lanes as well as restricting left turns (crossovers) is a long-term safety solution outlined in the 2015 Bend to Redmond Safety Options Plan.

Providing turn-around options will reduce the amount of distance that people must travel in unintended directions due to the median barrier.
