About
OR 8 is a busy 45 MPH, 5-lane highway through Cornelius with long distances between marked crosswalks. This project built a new crosswalk on OR 8 at East Lane along with a pedestrian activated beacon, also known as a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon, or RRFB. Additional related work included constructing new sidewalk, lighting, sidewalk curb ramps to meet ADA requirements, high visibility striping, a center pedestrian island and advanced flashing signs.
About Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs)
RRFBs use flashing yellow lights to alert drivers that someone is crossing the street. Pedestrians activate the beacons with the press of a button. When not in use, the flashing beacons are dark.
New flashing signs, located approximately 300 feet ahead of the crosswalk in both directions, give drivers advance warning that a pedestrian has activated the flashing beacon.
We install RRFBs at specific crossings with high pedestrian and vehicle traffic because they can reduce crashes by as much as 47 percent, according to the Federal Highway Administration. RRFBs are a critical part of our efforts to maintain a modern and safe transportation system.
