Aurora-Donald Interchange Phase 2

Construction Phase

Region 2: Willamette Valley and Northwest Oregon (Aurora, Donald, Marion)

We're building a diverging diamond interchange at I-5 Exit 278.

Banner: Slow down, in the work zone it could save lives. Building a modern transportation system to help Oregon’s communities and economy thrive. During construction, Give yourself more time, try a new way or mode to get there or take a different route.

Impacts

Traffic Impact

Nighttime lane closures and delays. Traffic is shifted while we work on widening I-5.

Construction Impacts

I-5 Construction LogoYou can expect:

  • Crews working daily, Sunday through Thursday with occasional night and weekend work.
    • Up to two lanes closed nightly in either direction on I-5 as needed from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Other roads in the project area to have single lane closures as needed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Reduced speed to 55 mph in the work zone.
  • Construction noise and delays.
Use caution as you drive through the work zone, there are grooves in the pavement along the median shoulder.

Construction Activities

You may see our crews working on:
  • Widening I-5 to make room for future traffic shifts.
  • Preparing to realign Dolores Way.
  • Lengthening the southbound I-5 entrance ramp.

Visit TripCheck for the most current traffic information.

Pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will have access through or around work zones.

Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers.

Remember: fines double in all Oregon work zones, whether workers and signs are present or not.

About

rendering showing an example of what the new interchange may look like, with a new I-5 bridge and the diverging diamond underneathApproximately 32,000 vehicles use Exit 278 Aurora-Donald or travel past the ramps entering and exiting I-5. The volume of traffic, proximity of roads and access points and visibility issues cause congestion and safety concerns around the interchange.

Phase 1A addressed some of these issues. Learn more about these improvements and how we got to our current design by visiting the Phase 1A webpage.

Project area map showing the I-5 Aurora-Donald interchange, highlighting Phase 2 work in orange. Phase 2 constructs the full diverging diamond interchange. This addresses the capacity issues by building an interchange that will work for years to come.

To do this we will:

  • Replace the I-5 bridges over Ehlen Road NE with one new bridge.

  • Reconstruct the I-5 travel lanes to match the new I-5 bridge.

  • Change the section of Ehlen Road NE under the I-5 bridge to have two lanes of traffic in both directions and new accesses to the I-5 on and off-ramps.

  • Lengthen and widen the southbound off-ramp, the southbound on-ramp and the northbound on-ramp –  completely upgrading all freeway ramps.

  • Relocate the Dolores Way and Ehlen Road NE intersection to the east.

There’s a similar diverging diamond interchange in Nevada. You can watch this video about it to get an idea of what the interchange we’re designing may look like.
